Hip Pain & Injury Care

Groin pain, a clicking hip, a torn hamstring or arthritis that has you limping. We treat hip problems across the spectrum, from therapy to hip arthroscopy and total hip replacement.

When to see a specialist

Signs your hip needs attention

If any of these last more than a couple of weeks, or started with a specific injury, an evaluation can find the cause before a small problem becomes a bigger one.

  • Deep groin pain
  • Pain on the outside of the hip, worse lying on that side
  • Clicking, catching or locking in the hip
  • Stiffness putting on shoes and socks
  • Pain in the back of the thigh after a sprint or lunge
  • Limping or reduced walking distance
Conditions we treat

Common hip conditions

Sports & acute injuries

Hip labral tear

A tear in the ring of cartilage around the hip socket, often felt as deep groin pain with clicking or catching.

Hamstring tear

A strain or tendon tear at the back of the thigh, sometimes pulling off the bone at the sit bone.

Hip sports injuries

Muscle strains, impingement and overuse injuries in runners, dancers and field athletes.

Chronic & degenerative

Hip osteoarthritis

Loss of joint cartilage that brings groin pain, stiffness and trouble with shoes and stairs.

Hip bursitis

Inflammation of the fluid sacs on the outside of the hip, painful to lie on.

Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI)

Extra bone on the ball or socket that pinches the joint and wears the labrum.

Chronic hip pain

Ongoing pain without a clear cause, worked up with exam and imaging to find the source.

Keep a small problem small

Surgery isn't always the answer. Most patients get better with physical therapy, bracing, medication or injections, and we try those first. When surgery will clearly help, we use minimally invasive and robotic-assisted techniques, and we decide on the plan together with you.

Physical therapy

Targeted strengthening and mobility work, coordinated with your therapist.

Bracing & activity changes

Support and a modified routine while the tissue heals.

Joint injections

Anti-inflammatory injections into the joint to calm pain so rehab can work.

When surgery is the answer

Hip procedures

  • Hip arthroscopyMinimally invasive, camera-guided surgery to treat problems inside the hip joint.
  • Hip labral repairArthroscopic repair of the torn labrum.
  • FAI surgeryReshapes the bone on the ball or socket to stop impingement.
  • Hamstring repairReattaches a torn hamstring tendon to the pelvis.
  • Arthroscopic bursectomyRemoves a chronically inflamed bursa through small incisions.
  • Total hip replacementReplaces the worn joint with an implant for advanced arthritis.
FAQ

Hip questions

Is my pain coming from my hip or my back?

They can feel similar. True hip joint pain is usually felt in the groin. Pain in the buttock or down the leg often comes from the spine. Our exam and imaging sort out which it is, and we coordinate with our spine team when needed.

Who is a candidate for hip arthroscopy?

Active patients with labral tears or FAI and little arthritis tend to do best. If significant arthritis is present, other treatments or a hip replacement may be the better option.

When is it time for a hip replacement?

When arthritis pain limits daily life and hasn't improved with therapy, activity changes and other conservative care. You and your surgeon decide together.

Do hamstring tears need surgery?

Most strains heal with rehab. A complete tendon tear off the bone, especially with retraction, often does better with early surgical repair.
